2018 Day of the Volkswagen, Western Australia

The world is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the humble Volkswagen Beetle, one of the greatest success stories in automotive history.

We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate as we spent time in the previous days prepping the ‘Pretzel’ for the annual pilgrimage to South Fremantle for the “Day of the Volkswagen”

A pre show meet up was organised at the Baywater Bandit's H.Q and after a short chat the convoy headed off to the show, picking up a few more dubbers along the way.

The big noticeable difference this year was the new branding the club introduced which was on point and the increase in the number of dubs in attendance.

There were a few stand out builds debuted and if you are a low-light Ghia fan you would have had a sensory overload on Bernie’s KG and Kasey's KG. Darren debuted his fresh n’ slammed Scirocco that looked right at home in the weeds, Paul in his funky’ cold patina’d Single Cab, Jonathan in his early KG and the 21 window Deluxe that was the last build from Al@Das Resto Haus. There was almost one of every model that VW had produced present at the show including many VW based kit cars as well.

The Pretzel came home with the 'President’s Choice' award which we proudly accepted and congratulations to all the other dubbers that took some silverware home.

Once again the show was a lot of fun, ran like clockwork and was extremely well organised. A big thank you to Jamie and all the club members involved..bringing us all to one fantastic spot to celebrate the much loved VW. Cheers!

Chopard Rally

The Chopard Classic Rally was held in Dubai, but unlike the previous 2 day event last year, this year was condensed into 1 day with Hatta as its destination.

Our application to compete this time in the 930 Turbo was accepted as we were envious spectators at last year’s rally. And so the race prep for car and driver commenced..

The event was approximately 460km and included a number of skill challenges along the way.  The previous night saw the 930 given a once over and a race number. We picked up our drivers book and had our plans in place to study hard all night to optimize our chances of success. This plan however soon went out the window with a few cold beers and car stories! As with many of these events it isn’t  just about the race, but about the interesting people you meet.

We arrived at the Armini Hotel and Burj Khalifa the next morning to pick our car up and headed for the grid. We were greeted  by a wide variety of cars; BMW’s, Mercedes, Jaguars including E-Types and an XK120, a wide range of Porsches, a beautiful Triumph and some American muscle competing for the win.

It wasn’t long before It became apparent  that we were not the only ones under prepared, and so we huddled together and discussed tactics. We were all going to be very strategic;). As we approached the start line, reality sunk in, this is it, will we get lost, have we got the timer ready, do we have pens, do we know what we are doing?????

We were ‘strategically’ late for the first few check points racking up penalty points quickly, but, as the day went on we definitely improved. Our first challenge definitely changed our outlook on the rally.  The challenge was an average speed test of 60km over an unknown distance.  All of a sudden we were self proclaimed ‘experts' and this was the start of a collection of perfect scores!

We arrived at Hatta for a quick 30mins lunch stop before we had to be back in the car and off to our next check point.

The UAE doesn’t have your typical countryside aspect, however, this is one beautiful country.  The sharp changes between desert and mountains, the beautiful way the sand dunes almost look like they have been painted on the landscape are simply stunning!

As we raced through uncharted roads and off road areas it was clear our earlier mistakes were going to cost us but now the challenge was how well we could finish.  As you will be aware if you have follow us, we’ve had a few teething problems with the 930 but she performed flawlessly. She is a low ish miles cars and it really felt like she needed the drive and the time on the road.

As we were heading to the finish line everything became a little more relax and we started to form small groups. For a while we hung out with the Flat.12 team of Mohammed and Max and also the Arabian Bison team of Ahmed and Ali.  These lads definitely put a smile on our faces after a long hard drive.

Only a few minor casualties on the day, a bad alternator and battery on the Triumph, oil cap issues on an E-Type Jag and a small and thankfully minor collision between a Toyota and one of the competing Ferraris, thankfully just a minor paint scratch (if anything can be minor on a Ferrari), oh and the guest driver ran out of fuel. We arrived at the awards ceremony in the dark of night with an air of expectation.

Congratulation to the winners Team XK120 and Gilbert as we cheered them on with a few well-earned glasses of wine.

This was just a fantastic day. Thank you to Chopard, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, Pure Drive, all the support staff and our friend Fred for putting on such a spectacularly well organized and presented event.

Also a special thank you to all the competitors with a special mention to the Dubai Drivers lads in the Mustang that we followed for a little while when we didn’t have a clue what we were doing.

We finished 13th out of 30 considering the really bad start we were over the moon with this.  To be honest, it wouldn’t of mattered if we came last, just a great day with great people and cars, couldn’t ask for more!

PCWA and RJP Motorsports Tech. Day

PCWA and RJP Motorsports had a tech day featuring a 911 restoration that was at ‘fit up’ stage.

With the sublime panel and paint and a well detailed 2.7 it was like a walking around a full scale model kit o display. Every component was brand new or restored to better than factory with a remarkable attention to detail with indexed bolts and matching hose clamps etc etc

As expected there were a good number of 911’s outside but amongst the mix were a couple of nice muscle cars with a racing ‘64 Stang, Shane in his “440” and Frank in a pro touring ’67 ‘Stang.

A big thank you for Richard for his hospitality and the Porsche Club of W.A for organising the tech day. A fantastic morning.

The Lamborghini Huracån Performante

Armed with the days necessities of jelly babies and fizzy cola bottles we headed to Abu Dhabi and the Yes Marina Circuit for what was to be a surreal experience..test driving Lamborgini’s latest creations!

We were greeted by Lamborghini UAE and Roger Dubuis representatives with keys to the new Lamborghini Huracån Performante and the Urus, Lamborghini’s second attempt at the SUV market (remember the LM002, the Rambo Lambo)

Its hard to put into words the feeling of being behind the wheel of a Lamborghini but  the Lamborghini UAE team’s description of it being like a mechanical orchestra was perfect. Imagine driving with an orchestra behind you playing the theme song from Indiana Jones!

The Huracan Performante was notably a higher level than the standard version. It was well balanced, direct and responsive and the roar from the V12 as we tailed the pace car through the circuit. It was everything one would imagine… a monster on the track and we would love to see this at Yes against a Porsche GT.

The Urus is the polar opposite to the Huracan Performante.  With its SUV suspension setup it was noticeably heavier and handled as expected in comparison but still a monster of an engine. This wasn’t like the laps we did in the Huracán. We ran wide and our footing was a lot less sure. As an SUV The vehicle itself is amazing.  The build and the styling are pure Lamborghini and with the head up display and G-force meter making you feel like you were in an aircraft cockpit.

2018 Motorsport Expo, Dubai

It seems to be automotive flu season with our rides so we Uber’d our way to the Autodrome for the 2018 Motorsport Expo.

Lecher Racing where present with their beautifully presented GT3 Cup car. Two 996’s were also at the show; a GT2 of which only 1287 were made and the other being a highly modified twin turbo WAIL motorsport Engineering driveline with a massive 1000HP+ on tap!

The event also included the unveiling of the 1 of 1 Gulf Edition McLaren Senna which was ever so slightly undone by the first Senna in the UAE arriving at the front of the Supercar Majlis drive.

Supercar Majlis had a big turn out of cars and is a well respected club here in the UAE with the group’s highly desired supercars.

We were very disappointed the 930 was not ready on time to do some laps around the track during the Hour of Power but there will be more opportunities to come..enjoy the pics!
