The Porsche Club organised a meet at the Yas Marina Circuit, the final circuit for F1 championship, for members to do some track work and to push their cars in a safe and controlled environment.
The first session was to learn the track and follow the racing line set by the new GT3RS pace car. Our group comprised of a Targa S, a Cayman Black Edition and 2 Carrera’s. The sequence was to learn the track and the race line whilst increasing the pace as we go. After each lap we would rotate position behind the pace car so everyone had the opportunity to follow the correct line and “chase” the GT3RS.
Due to sheer excitement for the day we arrived a little early and subsequently were the first inline to follow the pace car. It is clearly visible to see the scale difference between our 1978 SC against the much larger(and more powerful) 2017 GT3RS. Considering the age difference we managed to somewhat keep up with the RS and by the second session we had warmed up and were more confident.
A quick check of the oil temp. and oil pressure and all was good although we couldn't say the same for our new set of tyres! The GT3RS was now also warmed up and it was now clearly evident that we were behind something very special as the distance between us grew and our tyre screeching become alot louder.
Braking later than the GT3RS into the corners and then accelerating hard the SC gave it everything it had. Hitting the apex, rumbling over corners, brakes fading and tyres squealing, we were on the edge. As the GT3RS hugged the racing line while we swung from one side of the track to the other to try and maintain some pace and grip. For that one lap she was the Queen of the track.
Our little SC had driven in the lines of champions and legendary drivers and cars and we were so proud of her but it was time to retire from the track and enjoy a cold beer.
Thank you to the Porsche Club UAE for organising such an amazing event and the only repair required after the event was to the passenger door handle;)
